AVIAN INFLUENZA

*** Avian Influenza Prevention Zone ***

Update 3 November 2021

An Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) has been declared across Great Britain effective from 5pm on 3 November 2021. The AIPZ means all bird keepers in Great Britain (whether they have pet birds, commercial flocks or just a few birds in a backyard flock) are required by law to take a range of biosecurity precautions.

See the AIPZ section for further information.

Avian Influenza

(bird flu)

Those keeping birds, either commercially or as pets, need to be aware of the requirements following the outbreaks in some areas of England. Further information can be found here;

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/avian-influenza-bird-flu

Wild birds and wild bird food sources should be kept away from captive animals to stop the virus spreading.

Areas where birds are kept should be clean and tidy to minimise the risk of the virus spreading.

While the government says the risk to the public is "very low", it is a high infectious disease and can spread.

It is the times of difficulties and challenge when coupled with

those moments of success that makes the breeding of

budgerigars such an absorbing hobby.
